Back to School Alley Cat

This Sunday, September 25th from 2:00-5:30 pm.

It's the Back to School Alley Cat. Will you make the grade?

School's back in session with the Asheville Pedal Punks.

We'd like to invite you to come out and give it the old college
try. Make your way through school, where Asheville is the
classroom.

Not good at Math, don't worry, there are plenty of

other subjects where you can showcase your talents.

Make it to class on time, do your all your homework,

and bring your report card home to mom and dad. "Look ma,
I got a D+!"

School is in session at 2 pm September 25th at Carrier Park so

don't be late, because this school is really into corporal
punishment.

1st and 2nd place teams will walk away with some fabulous

prizes.

Crucial equipment list: Phone, camera, about 2-10 dollars,

a pen, your ID (for afterwards), and a bicycle that works.

Finishes at a secret location that rhymes with fly swatter
around 5:30-ish.

Ride on Sunday September 18th

Hey folks just a friendly reminder. There's ride on Sunday the 18th starting @ 4:30 pm at our usual meeting spot. It will be a casual affair, not too fast, not too slow, and we'll wait for everyone. You might want to bundle up as it might be cold in the afternoon. We'll end our ride at the Bywater after making a circuitous route through town. If you have any questions. Feel free to send us an email at cullen.reed(at)gmail.com or check us out on our Facebook page.

Cheers

Ride Sunday August 21

Been a while since we posted on this website. Facebook has become the medium of choice as of late, but it's time to blow the dust off this guy and get it going again.

This Sunday August 21st, there will be a beginners ride with your friends and neighbors leaving from our spot. Meet up @ 4:30 and we'll roll out around 4:45. We'll have a leisurely 10-ish mile (usually around 12 miles) ride through Asheville. It's easy for some, slightly challenging for others, but we hope it's something that everyone will take away enjoyment from. Bring water, a helmet, a semi-functioning bicycle, and a little drinkin' money and we'll take care of the rest. The ride ends at The Bywater (don't worry if you're not a member, we'll sign ya in.) for a cold drink and a great time with friendly folks.

Hope to see ya there!

Cullen

P.S. If you haven't heard already, The Asheville Pedal Punks are hosting The Back To School Alley Cat. It should be a fun bicycle scavenger hunt/race through the bustling streets of Asheville and should be an amazing time. To register check out our Facebook Event Page and click Attending.

Sunday Ride July 17th

Join us for a leisurely paced, 10-ish mile ride with your friends and neighbors. The ride meets @ 4:30 at our usual spot. We'll roll out at 4:45. This week's ride will feature the infamous Helen's Bridge, so bring some water and maybe a snack for a short but surely strenuous climb to this Asheville landmark (If it's un-godly hot we may skip this bit to avoid heat-casualties). Here we'll stop, enjoy the cooler climes of altitude, have a drink of water and who knows maybe you'll hear a ghost story. From Helen's Bridge it's a scenic, cruising downhill ride to the RAD and then a rolling finish on the west side of the FBR. We'll end at the Bywater for a much deserved frosty beverage. Hope to see ya out.

Whoo Hoo, red, white, and blue, Happy Fourth of July. Ride and Fireworks. Ok here's the deal. Ride at 4:30 as per usual, this week's ride will look something similar to past in town rides. Flat and cruisey. We'll finish at The Bywater around 6:30 and for those of you who want to join. Amber and I are heading up to McCormick Field for the fireworks a little later (possible to ride up Beaucatcher and catch them from Helen's Bridge (ooh Spooky).

Meet up here.

Ride on July 3rd

Ride on July 3rd is scheduled tentatively for July 3rd. I know some people may be out of town for this date so if we don't get enough interest we'll cancel. If we ride, we'll ride a bit later so that we can catch the fireworks from an interesting vantage point (Beaucatcher Mountain (really a big hill), Helen's Bridge perhaps). Then we'll head on down to the ol' Bywater for refreshment and merry making (some of us will not have work the next day, things could get a little crazy, so plan transportation arrangements accordingly).

Saturday June 25th at Asheville Community Yoga Center there will be a special program: Yoga for Runners and Cyclists taught by the lovely Lindsay Fields. Suggested donation is $15-$20, but as always at ACYC no one is excluded based on financial situation so pay what you can, if you can. Following the program there will be a leisurely all levels ride leaving out from the yoga center and following the river. Remember to bring a lock and a helmet for your bike. Also see the flyer on the previous post.

Ride on Sunday, June 19th, (yes, I know it's Fathers Day, is nothing sacred?)

Join us this Sunday, June 19th for a leisurely 10-ish mile beginner bike ride with your friends and neighbors. Show your Dad how much you appreciate him by bringing him along for a ride. Tell Dad to dust off that old Schwinn Varsity he's got in the garage, replace the tubes and come on out. We'll be meeting at 4:30 and riding out at 4:45. Our ride will follow a route that is relatively flat, but be aware this is Asheville so some hills are unavoidable (don't worry though we wait for everyone!). Our meeting spot is at 108 Mount Clare Ave. Click the link to go to a Google Map. Our ride will end as usual at The Bywater, don't worry if you're not a member b/c most of our regular riders are and so we can sign you in (provided you're over 21 or under 16 for children who are w/ parents.). Have a wonderful week and we'll see ya on Sunday!

Other News:

Asheville Community Yoga Center, the free yoga center in North Asheville, offers 7 free yoga classes a day and workshops and special events on the weekends. On June 25th from 2:30-4:00 they are offering a workshop specifically for runners and cyclist, targeting specifically the muscle groups used during these activities. The workshop is being lead by Lindsay Fields. She will be providing participants valuable information on breathing and visualization techniques, pre/post run/ride stretches, and proper alignment tips ensuring that you will be able to continue biking and running for a long time to come. You don't want to miss this event. There is a suggested donation of $20, but as always, they're the free yoga center so you can pay what you can afford.

Rumble on the River, Sunday, June 5th

Join us Sunday June 5th for an extra special edition Pedal Punks ride. It's going to be short, sweet, and wet. We will meet the scourge from West Asheville, Bike Gang! in unholy water combat. Come armed for water destruction. We'll meet up at the usual spot at 3:45 to lock and load (bring your own water weapons). The battle starts at 5:00 under the West Asheville bridge where we will unleash a watery hell onto Bike Gag, I mean Gang. Feel free to decorate your bike and yourself for this Road Warrior-esque showdown.
Here are the rules:

1. Anything goes as long as it's friendly, (no stains, no bodily fluids please)
2. You must disarm yourself before entering the Wedge's parking lot.

May the best gang win!

Sunday Ride May 15th

Our next ride will be on Sunday May 15th at 4:00 pm. We'll meet at the usual spot (check the map to the right) and it will be led by A.P.P.'s own Karen Into. Cullen will be out this week due to his beautiful niece's birthday party (2 years!),
Chasing duckies
which should be all kinds of fun as well.

If you're new the sport or new to the Pedal Punks, we invite you to meet up with us for a leisurely paced, social ride. We have people of all skill levels but mostly we cater to those that are new to cycling or are just Bike-curious. As long as you are will to pedal we'll wait up for you and cheer you on because cyclists are worth it. If you've come before and not finished a ride we encourage you to comeback. Don't worry about slowing us down, the only goal of this ride is to get everybody to the bar with bicycle and beer in hand. (even if you have to take a slight shortcut). Ugly bicycles very welcome!

In other news we're toying with the idea of volunteering at the Asheville On Bikes bike corral at the Mountain Sports Festival on Saturday May 28th. We would need about 6 to 10 volunteers, so keep that in the back of your mind. Also thinking of an "armed" confrontation  (water-balloon fight?) with that 2nd rate "bike gang" across the river. We'll keep ya updated.

P.S. Good job everyone who came out for mountain biking. You guys kicked my slow ass. We'll have to make this kind of an informal regular thing.

May Day Ride, Sunday May 1st!

I'm not really sure what May Day is a celebration of (workers rights mayhaps?) but hey what better way to celebrate it than a sweet ride with the Asheville Pedal Punks. Come join us for a leisurely 10-ish mile ride with your friends and neighbors. The ride meets at 4:00 pm and rides out at 4:15. We'll end up at the Bywater for a post ride drink. Looks like the weather is going to cooperate so come loaded for fun. A quick thanks to Timm Gamgee who made us some sweet buttons. Also be sure to pick up a T-shirt from the link at the bottom of the page. Also good job to all of you who competed in the Bad Egg Alley Cat last weekend. If you're looking for some fun shtuff this weekend check out the Big Love Fest downtown, as AOB will be out with their bike corral so you don't have to park your car and there'll be some amazing artists including the amazing Asheville Pedal Punks rider Jo Doyle! If you're new to the ride or just bike-curious I encourage you to join us here at 4:00 pm on Sunday.

Sunday Ride

It's that time again for another exciting Sunday ride with your favorite bicycle club. We'll meet on Sunday afternoon at the usual spot at the corner of Mount Clare Ave. and Hillside St. in N. Asheville. Meet up is at 4:00 and we'll roll out at 4:15. Make sure you sign in when you come and introduce yourself, after all it's a social ride. We'll take in a bit of Montford, a bit of downtown, some of West Asheville, a dab of the greenway system and end up at everybody's favorite watering hole, The Bywater. Last week was our biggest ride ever with 15 starters and with your help we can only grow. Have a great week and we'll see ya out on Sunday!

April Foolish Sunday Ride

Sunday's ride will meet @ 3:45 and begin @ 4:00 pm sharp at our usual meeting place at the corner of Mount Clare Ave. and Hillside Street in N. Asheville. April Foolish attire encouraged. We'll be lead by the wonder, beautiful, amazing, fantastic Karen Into as she welcomes another year onto her life. It will be a low pressure social ride with plenty of chances to catch up, catch your breath, catch the views, or catch up with your friends and neighbors. The weather seems like it's finally going to cooperate on Sunday so prepare for sun but bring sweater just in case. Also there will be a prize giveaway of something fabulous. I have a sneaking suspicion that we may have to start getting permits for this soon. Keep it up Punks!

Peace,

Cullen

Happy Birthday Karen!!!

P.S. a begrudging thanks to whomever of you Punks nominated me for a community service award, if this is community service then awesome.

April Foolish Ride Sunday April 3rd!

Our next ride will be on Sunday April 3rd at 4:00 pm. Pedal Punks veteran Karen Into will be leading the ride, as it is her, umm, 22nd birthday. We'll be meeting at the usual spot and will enjoy a leisurely 10-ish mile ride. Come as you are or as April Foolish as you like costumes encouraged! As always please wear a helmet and a light if possible. Here's a link to an incredibly cheap but effective LED bike light.

See ya there.

Returning to our Regularly Scheduled Program

Pedal Punks resumes it's regularly scheduled rides this week. Ride on Sunday beginning at 4:30. Meet at the usual spot. This week we'll meet a little later and take advantage of the amazing weather.

I also want to address some issues of group size. We had a phenomenal group last week and since our group has grown I'm having to learn to manage riding with a bigger group of people with different levels of skill (all of which we welcome). What I'd like to offer this week is a pre-ride talk about our route and possible drop-out points if anyone is feeling like they would like to hit the Bywater earlier. I don't want to lose people on the ride either so I want to make it clear that we will wait at certain points along the ride, especially after the gentle yet challenging climb into West Asheville. Another issue I'd like to discuss is riding safety. When we are on busier roads, lets try to stay single file, especially on Riverside and Haywood. This will ensure the safety of the group by giving ample space to other road users.

Hope to see you out this Sunday

Peace

Sunday Ride March 13th

No these aren't the Pedal Punks yet, but if you come out on Sunday it could be. Sunday's ride will be a little bit different than last time as we will be giving away a prize or two and we will have a slight route change. We will meet at the corner of Mount Clare Ave. and Hillside St. as usual at 4:00 pm. We'll leave at 4:10 sharp. To win the prize this week you need to bring the best joke you've got and we'll do a little stand-up session at The Bywater. Hope to see you out. The weather is going to be beautiful.

Peace

March Ride Schedule

The ride schedule in March is going to change slightly. We will ride on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays in March, instead of the 1st and 3rd Sundays. Again the dates on those rides are the 2nd and 3rd Sundays in March. The scheduling change is due to UNCA Spring Break starting the first weekend in March and my wife and I are taking a much needed vacation.

Other News, I'd love to see some of our people participate in this event:
Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day.
Stephen at Trips for Kids WNC is looking for some volunteers on Sunday April 3rd for Take A Kid Mtn Biking Day Spring Edition at Dupont State Forest. He is looking for all sorts of help from running a grill, working on bikes, leading rides or directing traffic. All skills levels are welcome to help out. If you are interested in this hit Stephen with an email. stephen@tripsforkidswnc.com.

Also Asheville On Bikes is having their super fun bicycling advocacy event Bike Love on Saturday, February 26th.
**Update** More Events

Asheville Idiotarod This is kind of a branch off into running which is not normally this group's focus, but this race is particularly fun.
Again, super pleased with last weeks turn out. Hope to see you all soon.
Peace,

Cullen

Fantastic Sunday Ride! Ride Vids, and March Ride News.

Wow, what a ride guys. Thanks for coming out and supporting the Pedal Punks and most importantly pat yourselves on the back for getting out and riding in this beautiful weather! Below is a little video of Sunday's ride. Hope you enjoy.

DownTube Films Presents

Here's the link in lieu of a direct post.

A little side note, March is going to be a weird month we're going to be doing the ride on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays in March due to prior commitments on the first Sunday (read: UNCA Spring Break). I know you'll have to wait 3 whole Sundays for the next ride, but then you'll get two in a row. Our staff scientists assure us that this is a safe dosage of Pedal Punk.
Thanks again everybody for coming out, and we'll see ya next time.

Peace, Love and Chain grease.

Update: Will try to get the video up shortly, I'm having trouble with the format for some reason.

Sunday Ride.....a belated post

It's that time again, time for the bi-monthly Bikes and Beers ride with Asheville Pedal Punks. We'll start a little earlier this week. We'll meet at 4:00 and get going at 4:10 to allow for stragglers. As per our usual we'll end our ride at the Bywater and enjoy some quality beverages before retiring to our homes and ultimately to facing another week at work, school, or joyous early retirement (or unemployment, it's all about perspective). Hope to see you all out.

Peace

Super Bowl Ride, Bikes, Beers, Brats, and Bywater Football

Sunday, as Karen Into pointed out to me at last week's Tourist Trap AlleyCat, is Super Bowl Sunday. So for a special day, a special ride. We'll start out at the usual meeting spot and end up at The Bywater. We'll take a 10 mile ride around Asheville and then get down at the Bywater. This ride will start at 4:30 pm, that way we can make it to The Bywater for the 6:30 kick-off.
I'm going to pick up some brats, buns, and a little charcoal for grilling at The Bywater (however this may change as it seems that they may be providing food as part of the festivities.) Let me know if you need a vegetarian option.
Football pads, cheese heads, decorated bikes and random football attire is encouraged. I'd like to see someone ride the whole way in field cleats. In case you (like me) didn't know its the Pittsburgh Steelers  vs. Green Bay Packers so dress accordingly. Like always, helmet-less riders are sentenced to a mandatory shunning and must buy the whole group a round, bring a light if you have one, dress for the weather and the party, and bring water. If I've forgotten anything let me know. This is going to be an awesome time and I can't wait to see all you Pedal Punks on Sunday.

Peace

Cullen

Ride details for Sunday

So for the first official ride of 2011 we will meet at the corner of Hillside and Mount Clare Ave in the parking lot there and have nice and "easy" ride around town. We will meet at 4:30 and leave around 4:40, be sure to dress for the weather and if it snows or is completely unbearable outside I'll post a cancellation, so check the web before you come. We should be done by about 6:30 so you can get home in time for Celebrity Apprentice or what ever is on TV these days. If you need help finding the place shoot me an email: hcreed@ncsu.edu with your phone number and I'll try to help you out. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

Bicycle Benefits and New Sunday Rides

Today the "Pedal Punks Team" did an awesome job in the Bicycle Benefits scavenger hunt coming in second place and winning the coveted Sweet Potato Trophy of Second Placedness. If you don't know about Bicycle Benefits check out they're website www.bicyclebenefits.org. It's an awesome organization that gives you some sweet discounts at local businesses just for riding your bike and slapping a sticker on your helmet.

Second order of business:
Due to a renewed interest in Bikes and Beer (honestly, how do you ever lose interest in either of these things), we are going to continue our tradition of Sunday rides but we will conclude the rides with a drink and the fabulous and cycle friendly Bywater on Riverside. We'll have our first official 2011 scheduled ride on Sunday the 23rd at 4:30 unless we get some requests to do it earlier. We'll continue rides on every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month instead of weekly rides. That'll give me time to plan rides and keep the rides fresh. Hope to see you guys next Sunday. Great job team.
